Orit Hofshi is a prominent Israeli contemporary artist renowned for her large-scale, woodcuts and mixed-media prints and drawings as well and installations, that explore themes of vast time, resilience, and the human condition. Based in Herzliya, Israel, Hofshi bridges traditional printmaking techniques with timeless narratives.
Inspired by the historic work of a select group of artists, the rocky landscapes of Hercules Seegers, the enigmatic figures in the landscape of Albrecht Dürer, and the passionate expression in Käthe Kollwitz’s anxious portraits, Hofshi delivers a continued exploration of the confluence of human history and the relationship to the unfolding of time on a geological scale. In the past decade, her work has graduated from monochromatic works to stunning use of painterly color. In these new works, three of which debuted at the IFPDA Fair in April 2026, each individual or animal is carved separately and then set into the landscape with a specific, yet elusive role. In Amphitheater 2025, there is an allusion to humans, but the predominant subjects are the rocks, and the wide open, brilliant green sky.
In 2026, Orit Hofshi was awarded the Lazar Prize for Contemporary Israeli Art and her solo exhibition is on view at the Petach Tikva Museum of Art through October. The Lazar Prize recognized outstanding contemporary Israeli artists. Hofshi’s work was prominently featured in the exhibit The Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and Its Legacy curated by Shelley Langdale, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (February 11-May 27, 2024).
Orit Hofshi’s work is in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Kunstsammlung im Deutschen Bundestag, Berlin, Germany; among other museums and private collections. Orit Hofshi studied at the School of Design, University of Haifa, Israel and continued her studies majoring in painting and printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, USA in 1990. She received her MA in 2002 from University of Leeds, United Kingdom.
