Karen Tompkins' prints and paintings explore the world in magnified view. Tompkins accentuates moments of the natural and human-made worlds including intensified views of sea foam and bubbles, Queen Anne's lace, and a trip through the car wash.
Q.A.L. (Queen Anne's Lace) is a portfolio of four large-scale, mixed media prints in an edition of 15 speaking to the artist's love of the convergence of nature and science. The laser prints are paired with multiple hand-drawn layers to achieve the end result, an exquisite tour de force in black and white. The Car Wash Series, a portfolio of 12 color archival digital prints, is available in a portfolio of 12 or individually as diptychs or triptychs. Car Wash is a stunning project of color, abstraction and the poetry of our relationship with water.
Tompkins studied at Pratt Institute, NY; the Academy of Fine Art, Rome, Italy; and the University of Arizona, Tucson. Her work has been in numerous exhibitions in New York City and collections include Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN and Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, OK.
