Cade Tompkins Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Dan Talbot. In his paintings, dense spaces keenly combine abstraction with a sensibility of realism akin to the works of Fairfield Porter and Pierre Bonnard. Talbot’s compositions rely less on traditional modes of pictorial structure and more on voluptuous color, poetic allusions and visual wit. He begins the work by creating a series of plein-air vignettes among which carefully executed blocks of color grow and expand until the painting resolves. In the large scale works on paper, underlying doodles mysteriously appear and disappear as they are layered with watercolor, acrylic and gouache. Both paintings and works on paper are the coordination of the artist’s hand with musings on everyday life, history, emotive color and space.
Dan Talbot holds a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (1996) and attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine (1995). He is the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Fellowship Award in Painting (2012) and Merit Award in Painting (2007). Residencies include Lijiang Studio, Yunnan China (2013); Ucross Foundation, Wyoming (2009); Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2009); and The MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire (2008).
