Orit Hofshi creates monumental works depicting distant, neo-romantic landscapes. The works in Ephemeral Passage (above) are part of Hofshi’s ongoing preoccupation and observation of the human condition. The centerpiece depicts a crowded ensemble, including several figures and a deer. The emotional tensions between figures and setting—aimlessness, resignation, resilience and introspection, are emphasized by the vague landscape or hazy topographical horizon, just beyond several massive boulders. The massive boulders in Ephemeral Passage reappear in Buffer Zone. The recurrence of the deer and boulders suggest a continued preoccupation with time and our brief existence, humans and animals alike. Amphitheatre stands out as a piece with no living beings present.  The desolate, rocky landscapes depict a deserted quarry, a prime example of implied human activity in a natural terrain that, once abandoned, can never return to its natural state of being.
